Tarsnakes, like the namesake tar patterns on roads across America, are in the context of this blog any allegorical event, thought or other phenomena that can trip you up along the way, or cause you to swerve or even crash. While tarsnakes are usually best avoided, at times they are unavoidable. And so, we discuss how to deal with these “life events” that either affect or stem from your running and riding.

Still, a tarsnake or other road or surface feature when viewed up close can reveal hidden beauty and perhaps even wisdom.

What to do after the tar snake of a bad race

By Christopher Cudworth Sooner or later, we all have a bad race. Running into trouble If you’re a runner, you might have planned all year for a marathon, and things went sour somewhere along the way. Or that half-marathon you … Continue reading

Putting Black Friday into a running and riding perspective

It’s still a bit stunning to me that the major shopping day in America is called Black Friday. Perhaps it is proof that Americans have really short memories. Do people really not recall that the term Black Friday was originally … Continue reading

The tarsnake of being thankful for things that didn’t happen

Thanksgiving is about saying thanks for everything you have in life. Food. Family. Love. Relationships. Your road bike. A favorite pair of shoes. See, if you run and ride, your perspective gets a little skewed toward your favorite activities. Nothing wrong … Continue reading

Sweating this one out

By Monte Wehrkamp Confessions of a sweater. I have the ability to sweat better, harder, faster and in greater volume than anybody I know. I can sweat at the drop of a hat, then sweat twice as much picking it … Continue reading

Caffeine is for wussies: How I quit and lived to tell about it

It’s not that far to fall

Running and riding both have their risks. Cyclists, however, are at greater risk of falling than runners. But that does not preclude those who run from exercising some caution, or at least watching where they step. Goof or Consequences The … Continue reading

When nature calls, we all face a tarsnake of how and where to go

We’ve all been there. 3 miles into a 6 mile loop and wham! The urge to go strikes with a vengeance. It can happen to anyone.  Like the poor woman I encountered crouching behind the thin cover of leafless hedge … Continue reading

A tribute to a rider named John.

Last evening the guys in our group ride received the sad news that a longtime rider on Saturday and Sunday mornings had passed away suddenly. The causes are not yet known, but it seems he was simply enjoying using his … Continue reading

A lasting, longing lament about Lance as liar. And how we see ourselves in him.

By Monte Wehrkamp I lied. I’m a liar. I cheated. I skirted rules for my own advantage. I manipulated. I behaved in ways to get my own way. I take no pride in these actions and behaviors. In fact, every … Continue reading
