You can’t run from guns in America

In February a man named Ahmaud Arbery was shot while out running in a Georgia neighborhood. News coverage of the apparent murder lists several alibis on the part of those who shot Arbery. Video of the incident exists, and it … Continue reading

What sharing the roads means to American civility

I composed this meme this morning because I spent a couple hours studying the roads while on a 30 miles ride. I was noticing how many types of road shoulders cyclists need to navigate while riding. It also occurred to … Continue reading

The trials and tribulations of a right hand man

This weekend my wife completed the Half Ironman in Madison, Wisconsin. That’s no mean feat given a course that is hilly beyond belief. At several points the grade reaches 10% and a long steep stretch up a country road called … Continue reading

Divvy up that commute, would ya?

I’d like to share a couple things about commuting to Chicago. My goal is to make it efficient to get to and from my home to the office in the city where I work a new gig as a … Continue reading

Riding outside the White Line

There is little reason to not share the road with cyclists or runners other than raw selfishness. Even a large crowd of cyclists taking up a lane of country road on a Saturday morning can be passed eventually. Yet there … Continue reading

It’s a giant game of chicken on the roads

So you see it really is the product of a mindset of dominance and violence of one “tribe” of people toward another. Granted there are elements of prick cyclists making it worse for everyone. Yet the mere fact of existing as an entity on the roads is motivation for the haters to move forward with an agenda of aggression toward cyclists. These actions are protected by laws governing free speech, but at some point the hate does convene into action. And who is then responsible? Continue reading
