It’s an interesting problem trying to figure out what to expect (or not expect) as you age as an athlete. See, the idea of aging is both a reality and a mindset. We have no control over the fact that … Continue reading →

A dose of reality and humility can be the toughest transition of all. That’s one of the tarsnakes of life. Continue reading →

The time and place for competition

Two of the main passions in my life began at about the same age. I was twelve years old when I started running. That was the same age I also became a birder. Both interests began with seminal experiences earlier … Continue reading →

Some thoughts from the running track about cycling

So, yesterday I signed up for the Galena Duathlon. That would be the race that has more vertical mileage than horizontal. And what did I do to prepare? Why, I went to the track last night, of course! If we’re … Continue reading →

Is drinking Coke an acceptable thing for those who run and ride?

After my own family doctor warned me that caffeine was the enemy in more than one way, I became a zealot for the anti-Coke habit. I told many of my friends about the relationship between a bad prostate and too many soft drinks. I even shared my anti-caffeine knowledge with female friends who admitted they had yeast infections or candida*. I was out to save the world from bad scenes Down Under. Continue reading →
