Weekend bookends for a roadie and triathlete

The storms passing through the Midwest and Illinois this year are no more intense than usual, but they are a little more frequent. Last weekend’s duathlon in a downpour was an interesting experience. This weekend’s sweeping series of rainstorms made … Continue reading

Not appearing anytime soon on a magazine cover

The other day when Triathlon magazine showed up at my girlfriend’s house, she rightly made this sound when glancing at the cover. “Ohmmmmm….” Because the cover showed a hunked up, perfectly smooth and fit body of a young male triathlete. He … Continue reading

A new and healthy way to look at competition in life

Whether you choose to believe it or not, you’re always competing with yourself. I know I do. It’s inevitable that we compare our current selves to our past selves. We want to know how we’ve grown or changed. We ache … Continue reading

Hitting the bricks in more ways than one

I have a relative that lives in Wilmette, Illinois. The side streets there are wonderfully paved with bricks. They are lumpy and bumpy and noisy to drive on, but they work. There used to be tons of brick streets, but … Continue reading

What does it really mean to age as an athlete?

It’s an interesting problem trying to figure out what to expect (or not expect) as you age as an athlete. See, the idea of aging is both a reality and a mindset. We have no control over the fact that … Continue reading

It’s all about the transitions

Turns out you could actually use a little time in transition to reassess your values and figure out the many things in life that are not so perfect about you. Some might even be painfully neglected. A dose of reality and humility can be the toughest transition of all. That’s one of the tarsnakes of life. Continue reading

Doubling the fun at the Galena Triathlon and Duathlon

The Galena Triathlon/Duathlon celebrated its 20th running this year. That’s a lot of years to conduct an event that requires both the race directors and athletes to perform a double set of logistics. It’s really an impressive effort by race organizers to make use of some beautiful landscape and provide a rich experience for the athletes. Plus the town of Galena is a pleasant and inviting place. All told it’s a wonderful race in that celebrates the distinctive environment of the driftless region covering northwest Illinois, southwest Wisconsin and northeast Iowa. You should take your bike and go there if you haven’t already. It’s the Best of the Midwest! Continue reading
