This is your moment

Yesterday while having dental work done, it occurred to me how few people in this world actually live and work in the moment. So let me describe the scene yesterday. The dentist I visit is a wonderful Muslim woman with … Continue reading

You’ve got a good head on your shoulders, sometimes

So yesterday while running I had an embarrassing thing happen. My damn head fell right off. At first I didn’t notice. Not for a few strides. But then my head was lying there watching my body running off without me … Continue reading

A successful experiment with the Waterford bike

A while back I wrote about the difficulty I’ve been having at the competitive level in duathlons and triathlons getting good results in the bike segment. No matter how hard I rode on my Felt 4C, or how I managed … Continue reading

Approaching fitness, training and life like a realist

The sports of swimming, running and triathlon are great for both men and women in terms of body image. They give you some degree of control over how much fat hangs out on your frame, and how your muscles look and perform.

Heavy Guy Getting PumpedNo, we don’t have perfect control over all that. And perception has much to do with how we ultimately conceive and project ourselves on the world. Our vanities sometimes expose our worst attributes. Continue reading

Triathlons bring out the beast or just the best of us

Yes, all this sounds pathetic in some respect. But it’s par for the course to be nervous about some aspect of the triathlon when you’re starting out. Some find the idea of riding a bike in traffic disarming, or find the run portion daunting. Yet as you train you eventually overcome your fears. Then come longer courses and challenges like open water swims, hilly bikes and hot runs. That’s the so-called “charm” of the sport. It never really gets easier. You just go longer, faster or grow obsessed in the process. Continue reading

The obsession with sports and the infantilization of society

While walking through my local Target store, a tee-shirt jumped out at me. It said “NEVER DEFEATED.” The shirt was obviously suited for a three-year-old child. And I thought: “Of course you’ve never been defeated you little twit. You’re three … Continue reading
