Sideswiped and gutter sniped

There are a couple stories about which I’ve been holding out on you. One involves an incident last weekend with a gutter snipe driver who calculatedly attempted to run four of us cyclists off the road. guttersnipe [ ˈgətərˌsnīp ] NOUN derogatory … Continue reading

Not appearing anytime soon on a magazine cover

The other day when Triathlon magazine showed up at my girlfriend’s house, she rightly made this sound when glancing at the cover. “Ohmmmmm….” Because the cover showed a hunked up, perfectly smooth and fit body of a young male triathlete. He … Continue reading

Facing up to the beer and calories question

I love a good beer. These days there are plenty from which to choose. Craft brewing is now mainstream and breweries are popping up everywhere. One of the world’s top new breweries is located in the small town of Decorah, … Continue reading

A new and healthy way to look at competition in life

Whether you choose to believe it or not, you’re always competing with yourself. I know I do. It’s inevitable that we compare our current selves to our past selves. We want to know how we’ve grown or changed. We ache … Continue reading

Hitting the bricks in more ways than one

I have a relative that lives in Wilmette, Illinois. The side streets there are wonderfully paved with bricks. They are lumpy and bumpy and noisy to drive on, but they work. There used to be tons of brick streets, but … Continue reading

On Wisconsin and bicycle stupidity

So the state to the north of Illinois has been the scene of many interesting expressions of the New America men like Scott Walker and the Koch Brothers want to create. From dunning organized labor to sneakily manipulating education funding right and … Continue reading

The mysticism of training with cranes

Convergences such as these where ancient lives mix in the sunlight traveling millions of miles to earth are truly magical. As Sue and I conducted our respective workouts, our minds fell to the task of movement while the cranes casually walked and fed in the grassy infield. Continue reading

Problems are almost always underfoot

I met a friend at a local Starbucks yesterday. He told me his running was completely curtailed due to a knee injury. This is a guy that already has completed an Ironman. I’ve cycled with him and he’s got an engine … Continue reading

Doubling the fun at the Galena Triathlon and Duathlon

The Galena Triathlon/Duathlon celebrated its 20th running this year. That’s a lot of years to conduct an event that requires both the race directors and athletes to perform a double set of logistics. It’s really an impressive effort by race organizers to make use of some beautiful landscape and provide a rich experience for the athletes. Plus the town of Galena is a pleasant and inviting place. All told it’s a wonderful race in that celebrates the distinctive environment of the driftless region covering northwest Illinois, southwest Wisconsin and northeast Iowa. You should take your bike and go there if you haven’t already. It’s the Best of the Midwest! Continue reading
